No menu on home page

I have added a page to my website and would like it to appear in the menu. I understand that to do that I have to create my own menu in the dashboard and select that to be used by default.

The problem is that once I enable that menu, the menu is completely removed from the homepage. It does show up on the other pages of the site although the ‘Home’ like has gone.

I would really appreciate any guidance on this issue.
