Make sidebar go away on post pages?

Hi all! 2 questions really, both about the side bar:

1) Is it possible to make the side bar (with widgets, etc) go away when the person clicks on a post title to read it. I like the side bar on teh home page, but t seems annoying to have it there when you are trying to read a post. I would like the post itself to be full-page, with no side bar.

2) Is it possible to take away a column on the first page. I only want 1) sidebar and 2) featured images and post titles..There seems to be an “empty” column of white space, just taking up valuable real estate. Any way to get rid of that? I have played around for about 30 minutes with all of the possible combos in “lay out” and have not found a way. I like the wide-screen format, but only want a small left-hand space for sidebar widgets (like an about me box) and then more space for featured images and titles.
