Header background color

Hey,

I’ve read many articles about this problem but all those solutions are just making me confused and I still haven’t found one that would work for me.
I would like to change the header background color without changing it for the whole page. Is this even possible? I don’t want to do it with a header image because I don’t want to loose FB and search icons. Also I’m not very familiar with CSS so a step-by-step solution would be much appreciated.
