Looking at the widget page, the one saying “Header”:

“Displays in the header. Intended exclusively for displaying ads of standard dimentions.”

Umm, what “standard dimensions” are we talking about here, exactly? There are quite a few, looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_banner#Standard_sizes but I’m guessing it’s “3:1 Rectangle” or “Half Banner” we’re talking about?

And trying out the smallest “standard size” banners, I’m still scratching my head, because all three broke the layout by removing the tagline, social media icons, and search.

    I tried these, for reference:
    234×60
    120×60
    88×31

Using Firebug, it seems like the Jetpack Image defaults to 728 width, which I’m sure can be hacked by custom CSS, but it would be good to know if we’re meant to leave the Header widget on the widget page alone altogether because the theme doesn’t support it, or if it actually CAN be used for anything. πŸ™‚

Hi Traxy I’ve played all the settings for the Ads header before. I’m using Google Adsense and the normal leaderboard banner 728×90 works nicely on desktop but there is a problem when viewed on mobile. So the best ad size i’m using right now is 468×60 horizontal banner which works almost perfectly on mobile device although on some mobile device/browsers there is still a bit of cropping on the right side.
Here’s my website for reference http://www.360virtualtourist.com

I’m not ready to place ads in my header yet, but intend to, so I appreciate mjamsf’s reply.

I did read somewhere that placing an ad there will remove the tagline. Therefore, there are two other options I’m thinking of using for my tag line. One is to place it in a text widget in the “footer wide”. If you aren’t using this or aren’t familiar with it, the “footer wide” is a section just below the menu or below the slider if you have one. (View the demo for an example http://demo.onedesigns.com/pinboard/

Also, I may incorporate my tag line in a custom header where my site name goes, possibly included in a photo. I have no clue how to do this yet, but as with everything else, one small step at a time!

Sorry, the field I meant to say was “Wide”, not “Footer Wide”, for the text below the menu or slider.

Thanks Jiffer, you can actually create a header logo consisting of your logo, site name and tag line. Just like what I did on my site
