So far, all I can do is get a small picture to the left of my header. I’ve tried cropping it and using suggest dimensions that I found in two different places related to this theme. No matter what I do, it’s a small photo on the left. Do I need to use CSS for this?

It might be better in the short run to downgrade your Pinboard theme to 1.0.7 until the many issues are resolved. Pinbard 1.0.7 is stable and a good platform. There is a lot more support threads about headers, etc available on this forum.
