Are ads widgets?

I am new to WordPress and like the look of the Cover WP theme. It’s very close to what I want, but I am curious about how to add ads to my site and how to hide elements that I don’t want to use. I should probably be looking at a manual, but…

The sidebars are made for standard ads to fit in.
Just add a text widget and paste the ad code inside.
