When you want to transfer Outlook PST files into Thunderbird, you may also wonder if Thunderbird has incremental migration support — that is, only sending new emails instead of re-sending every email all at once again. Unfortunately, Thunderbird does not have a native support for PST files, or for incremental migration. This is a challenge, especially if you regularly receive new data from Outlook, and don’t want duplicates in Thunderbird! We will look at the manual method first, and then how Mailvita PST to MBOX Converter for Mac can simplify this.

    Manual Method

The manual method uses (for example) IMAP account (like Gmail) as an intermediary:

Add your IMAP account to Outlook.
Move emails from the PST file into the IMAP account to upload to the mail server.
Add the same IMAP account to Thunderbird:

Thunderbird downloads the emails into its folders.

This approach works, and there are two major drawbacks:

No incremental migration → every time you upload, you may upload the same emails intermittently!
Attachment limits and sizes → IMAP services (again taking Gmail for example) typically only allow attachments about 25 MB, so the larger files will not transfer.

Mailvita PST to MBOX Converter for Mac

This application is an easy and reliable option to migrate PST data into Thunderbird, and it supports incremental migration. Instead of going through IMAP, this application converts PST files to MBOX directly, which Thunderbird supports.

With its date filter, you can also migrate only new or updated emails to avoid duplicates.

Users can select specific folders (not convert the whole PST every time) such as the Inbox or the Sent Items folder.

There are no size restrictions on attachments, so emails with REALLY large attachments are imported without issue also.

The original folder hierarchy, metadata, and formatting are preserved, so you won’t lose anything.

You can import the MBOX into Thunderbird with the add-in ImportExportTools NG, or you can use the import option built directly into Thunderbird.

Thunderbird does not, by itself, support incremental PST migration. You can shift over data with the manual IMAP method, but you will repeat old emails, and large attachments are difficult to manage. The Mailvita PST to MBOX Converter for Mac allows users to migrate over data ONLY (selectively) so new data, with full attachment utilization and folder support, is migrated for a faster, more accurate PST migration.
