Front page home AND blog page

I would like to have my front page (Home) with a photo gallery and a separate static blog page with posts. I played with “settings- reading” and selected “front page displays” with choice of front page and post page but it does not work: my “home” page is not listed OR if I create a static home page then the blog page works but there is no gallery on the home page.
