hi. relative WP newbie, trying to build a site with Esplanade. the demo versions of the theme look fantastic, but it definitely doesn’t look like that out of the box. is there any where you can point to that has advice on getting started with Esplanade?

It’s easier than it seems. There are only 2 features that don’t work out of the box.
1. Post thumbnails:
To set a post thumbnail when editing a post go to the upload tool, select the image you want to set as thumbnail and select “Use as featured image”.2. Post formats:
You can select specific formats when editing posts in the right column under “Post Format”. Here’s what each format does:- Gallery: shows teh first 6 images attached to the post
- Aside: Displays the post content without title
- Link: The post title links to the first link in the content
- Status: Displays the content without title and the author’s avatar, similar to Twitter
- Quote: Displays the first blockquote tag
- Chat: Displays odd and even lines of text separately styled to suggest a discussion
- Image: Displays the first attached image with a caption
- Audio: Displays a player for the attached audio files
- Video: Displays the first embedded video or a player for the attached video files
