Issues with the mainpage display

I am new to wordpress and thus new to the pinboard theme. I am having a couple of issues, which I am sure are an easy fix, but I am just not seeing it.

1. How do I get the sticky posts from displaying on my mainpage?

2. I want to display pages on my mainpage that will be static. I have seen other pinboard themes like this where they will have blocks of three per column some go 2 rows down while others go more. Is that displayed using posts or is that something else?
