New div on a template so the page content and sidebar have diff color background

Hi

I hope someone has an answer for this. I have been bashing my head around trying to achieve this.

I would like to add a div to a template so that the page content and sidebar have a different color background to the wrapper. I have added the div and applied a CSS class to the template but it does not seem to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
