Pinboard: Adjusting the layout

Hello everybody!

First of all I would like to say thank you for creating such a beautiful template!

Now, my problem is that I have no idea where and how to start to make the template look like I want.

I am experienced with HTMl & CSS, but I just need a little advice to what to use and what to read on so I can achieve my goal.

Here is the sketch that I want the site to look like:

Will I have to use special plugins, or widgets?
Or create the design in Photoshop and just add links that people can follow?

I am so confused!
