Uploaded Images (less than 1MB) enlarged

Whenever I upload a picture and place it in one of the posts to form the featured graphic of a gallery it comes in so zoomed in that the picture (even fully expanded) can not be appreciated. I’ve reduced the size of the pictures, no luck. I really like the theme and would like to keep using it, is there a way to resolve this that won’t have me seeking another theme?
