Header formatting problem

I’m trying to get a custom header image to display using the theme option. It is a png formatted to 250×64, well under the 100 px cap and this is what I get…

It will only allow me to drag that crop box halfway, then when I post it and accept the change it displays on the page like this

I’ve been through all of the posts and haven’t seen a suitable solution. I’ve tried modding the header default size to 200px but that still doesn’t solve the crop box problem. I’ve seen other sites do this well, but no indication of how they did it. For example:

Do I have to create a header that fully utilizes the dimensions to get it to display correctly? That’s the only solution I can see right now. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you want to use the built in header image then yes. You can however always hard-code the image into the header with the right dimensions.
