how to ad post navigation

I would like to ad post navigation into the Pinboard theme. Going to older or newer posts or portfolio items would be a great tool for visitors. I already found an option in the theme options menu/general, but it does not seem to work. I also tried to ad some code from the wordpress codex in the functions.php but this does not work either (restored it afterwords offcourse). What am I doing wrong?
