I can’t seem to control the size of youtube videos in this theme. They seem to always want to stretch the full size of the column. Is there anyway to control the size besides using smaller columns?
Videos are made to be responsive, that’s why they behave like this. There’s no way to control their dimensions.
Viper’s Video Quicktags is the plugin you need.
I tried it myself with Vimeo and youtube and it works like a charm.

i changed to the Viper’s Video Quicktags as recommended (because of size issues)
vimeo vids show correctly at right size, but youtube videos now show simply white background of template. now embedded video, no link, just white space where the video should be?
I’ve used the same video as you did ( hummingbird ) It’s posted to the blog list bigger than its column.Basically it’s not being resized.
I’d use a column plugin to define column sizes within a post

Then videos will autofit to fill these columns.
